Valentine's Day 2027 falls on Sunday 14 February, and Presidents' Day, the US federal holiday, falls the next day on Monday 15 February. That's the detail that should shape the booking. A Saturday Valentine's gives you a dinner; a Sunday one with a Monday holiday behind it gives you Friday 12 to Monday 15, with the day itself in the middle. For couples, Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort is the strongest choice in the country for that window: fifteen tented bungalows, thirty guests at capacity, a published minimum age of 16, and the only dated Valentine's programme on this list.

February is also a better month in Mexico than most couples realise. Humpbacks are in Banderas Bay on the Pacific coast, two thirds of the way through a season that has run from 8 December to 23 March in each of the last two years. On the Caribbean side, February sits near the annual low point for sargassum, months before the June and July peak.

One thing to know before you compare packages: exactly one resort here publishes a dated Valentine's program for 2027, and it's the smallest property on the list. Everywhere else you'll find year-round romance packages with no date attached. We checked every property, and where a real dated programme exists we name it and give the date.

Quick answer:

  • A couples-only weekend, and the only dated 2027 programme here: Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort

  • Whales still in the bay, and water you can swim in: Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita

  • A private villa and pool for two: Viceroy Riviera Maya

  • The dinner, with a MICHELIN star inside the rate: Grand Velas Riviera Maya

  • A spa weekend, with a garden suite built for two: Four Seasons Resort Cabo Del Sol

  • The Caribbean at the cleanest point in its year: Maroma, A Belmond Hotel

  • The newest opening, and a swimmable Baja beach: Amanvari

How we chose these resorts

This is a ranking for one long weekend, which is a different question from ranking Mexican resorts in general. Every claim below is checkable against the property or a named third party, and we say so when a resort publishes nothing.

Criterion

What it captures

Privacy for two

Whether a couple can actually be alone: villa counts, private pools, guest ceilings, minimum ages.

Published programming

Whether there's a real, dated Valentine's calendar, or only a year-round romance package.

What February gives you

Whales, sargassum risk and water temperature, which vary more between Mexico's three coasts in February than at any other point in the season.

The Valentine's Day 2027 calendar

Date

What it is

What it means

Mon 1 Feb

Mexico's February statutory rest day, marking the 5 February constitution anniversary.

Mexico's own long weekend is two weeks before yours. Domestic demand peaks then, not on the 14th.

Fri 12 Feb

The natural arrival day.

Two full days before Valentine's. Restaurants aren't yet at their busiest.

Sun 14 Feb

Valentine's Day, and in Mexico, Día del Amor y la Amistad.

The peak night everywhere. Expect set menus whether or not one is advertised.

Mon 15 Feb

Presidents' Day, a US federal holiday.

The reason this is a three-night trip and not a dinner. You fly home on the holiday.

Two things follow. The 14th is the middle of the weekend, not the end of it, which is why Friday 12 to Monday 15 is the window worth booking. One caveat: Presidents' Day binds federal employees, and private-sector observance varies, so check your own calendar before assuming the Monday is free.

In Mexico, 14 February is Día del Amor y la Amistad, the Day of Love and Friendship, and the friendship half isn't decorative. The federal population council uses the name officially, schools mark it with convivios and kermesses, and Mexico's statistics institute publishes a data release for the date. Practically, a Mexican resort on 14 February holds families and groups of friends alongside the couples, which is worth knowing if the point of the trip is to be alone together.

The last piece of timing is the ocean. Humpbacks are in Banderas Bay in mid-February. SEMARNAT sets the season afresh every year and the 2026 to 2027 notice hadn't appeared when this was written, so treat mid-February as reliably in season on the strength of recent years and check before you build the trip around it. Each recent notice has also closed two areas to observation: within 1.5 km of the Islas Marietas, and a 2 km coastal strip from Punta Mita to the mouth of the Río Ameca, where mothers with calves shelter.

1. Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort: Best for a Couples-Only Weekend

Fifteen tented bungalows, thirty guests at capacity, and a published minimum age of 16.

  • Location: The Punta Mita peninsula in Nayarit, on 48 forested acres of its own, five minutes from Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita.

  • Best for: Couples who want the weekend to be genuinely private, on a date when Mexican resorts fill with families and groups of friends.

  • Valentine's: The only dated 2027 program on this list. Canvas of the Heart runs 13 to 14 February with guest artist Fer Da Silva: Gratitude Hearts and a guided heart meditation on the Saturday afternoon, live painting over a Dinner from the Heart that evening, and a sensory experience on Valentine's morning. Complimentary, included in the nightly rate.

  • What's included: All food and drink through the day, including many premium wines and spirits; one 90-minute spa journey per stay; a personal guide.

  • Don't miss: The House of Heat, the temazcal, built as a circular chamber in stone, bamboo and lime plaster.

Overview

Naviva opened in December 2022 with fifteen tented bungalows across 48 acres and a ceiling of thirty guests, which makes it the smallest property here by a wide margin. Luxury Frontiers designed it and EDSA laid out the landscape; the two spa pods take their shape from the seed vessels of the ceiba tree. Cocina Copal, the open-air kitchen, keeps no standing menu, so meals get built around what you want that day.

For this weekend it solves a problem nothing else here can. Because 14 February in Mexico is a day for friends and family as much as for couples, a Mexican resort on that date is rarely full of couples, and a minimum age of 16 with a thirty-guest ceiling is the direct answer. Guests also get full access to Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita next door, with dining there signed back to the bungalow.

Downside: It's the most expensive entry here, and airport transfers aren't included.

2. Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita: Best for Whales and Water You Can Swim In

Two swimmable beaches on a coast the Atlantic seaweed never reaches, in the middle of humpback season.

  • Location: Punta Mita, Nayarit, roughly 45 km and 45 to 60 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta airport.

  • Best for: Couples who want the ocean in the weekend, and anyone traveling in the Mexican spirit of the date with parents or friends along.

  • Valentine's: Nothing dated at the resort itself. Its neighbor Naviva runs a program, and the two are separate hotels. What Punta Mita sells for the night is bookable year-round: a four-course Romantic Dinner at The Rock, from USD 965 a person, or the same on the sand, from USD 921.

  • Acclaim: Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star in the 2026 Star Awards, AAA Five Diamond for 2026, and Two MICHELIN Keys.

  • Don't miss: Hole 3B on the Pacífico course, the Tail of the Whale, a natural island green playable only at low tide.

Overview

The resort opened in September 1999 as the first Four Seasons in Mexico, and holds 177 accommodations alongside 22 villas, seven residences and three beach homes, with Diego Villasenor as architect and a 13-room spa, Apuane, whose name comes from the Huichol word for a stream of water.

February is the perfect month for Punta Mita. Humpbacks are in Banderas Bay mid-month, and the two beaches, Cuevas and Manzanillas, sit on opposite sides of the point and are both swimmable, which is unusual enough on this coast to state plainly. The Pacific side sits outside the Atlantic sargassum belt entirely, so the seaweed question that shapes a Caribbean booking doesn't arise. In July 2026 Wine Spectator gave its Award of Excellence to all three signature restaurants, Aramara, Bahía and Dos Catrinas, the second year running. At Apuane the couples treatment is published as Just the Two of Us, opening with a copal cleansing ritual.

Downside: Nothing is walkable, so leaving means a car. Guests who love the place still say plainly that it's expensive.

3. Viceroy Riviera Maya: Best for a Private Villa and Pool

Forty-one free-standing villas, not one conventional room, and a pool at every single one.

  • Location: Playa Xcalacoco, north of Playa del Carmen, under 45 minutes from Cancún airport.

  • Valentine's: Nothing dated. Its All About Love package runs year-round and never mentions 14 February.

  • Minimum age: 12, per the resort's own FAQ. Booking sites listing 14, 16 or adults-only are out of date.

  • Don't miss: Xaman-Eek', the Wayak Spa's love ritual, the one treatment here actually built around the theme.

Overview

Forty-one free-standing villas and no conventional rooms is a rare configuration at this price, and every villa has its own private or plunge pool. It opened as Ikal del Mar, became Tides Riviera Maya in 2007, and took the Viceroy name in 2011. Wayak Spa runs five treatment rooms and a ritual menu drawn from Maya practice. It holds a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star rating and appeared in US News' 2026 Best Resorts in Mexico. The scheduling logic is the point: the good adults-only properties sell out first for a holiday weekend, and 41 villas with their own pools gets you to the same privacy by another route.

Downside: seaweed is the standing risk on this coast even in a good month, and guests report large rough rocks in the shallows, which doesn't go away seasonally. Six acres is genuinely small. The property names no architect or interior designer anywhere, unusual at this level.

4. Grand Velas Riviera Maya: Best Valentine's Dinner

A MICHELIN-starred tasting menu that the nightly rate already paid for.

  • Location: Km 62 on the Cancún to Tulum highway, about 45 minutes from the airport.

  • Valentine's: Real history, nothing current. A 30 January 2025 release put a couples' treatment, CBD Bliss and Cacao Harmony, at 110 minutes and $752 a couple. The live offers page is badly stale, with terms still reading 2019.

  • Acclaim: Cocina de Autor holds one MICHELIN star, in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and took the guide's 2025 Service Award. SE Spa holds Forbes Five Stars; the hotel itself is Forbes Four-Star.

Overview

Opened in 2008, all-inclusive, 539 suites. The reason it's here is one restaurant. Cocina de Autor has held a MICHELIN star in every Mexican guide published so far, under executive chef Nahum Velasco with Mikel Alonso and Bruno Oteiza consulting, and its tasting menu sits inside the nightly rate with no supplement. On a night when every good restaurant in the country runs a set menu at a premium, that's an unusual proposition.

Downside: the same reviewers who rate the food warn about how it's served. The travel writer Tamara Gruber reports a two-hour dinner service every time, portions she found unusually small, and dining rooms kept dark. She also found the pool unheated and chilly in March, a sharper problem in February. At 539 suites this is a large, family-friendly resort, and the only adults-only pool is in the Grand Class section.

5. Four Seasons Resort Cabo Del Sol: Best for a Spa Weekend

Ten treatment rooms that each open onto a private garden, two of them built for two.

  • Location: Carretera Transpeninsular Km 10.3, on the corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Thirty minutes from the airport.

  • Valentine's: Nothing, and the absence is clean: the seasonal calendar runs to Christmas, New Year and Thanksgiving and stops. For 13 to 16 February the applicable offers are La Buena Vida, a third night free, and advance purchase at up to 20% off.

  • Acclaim: Condé Nast Traveler's 2025 Hot List, Travel + Leisure's 2025 It List, and a Gold Key award in the Resort category in 2024.

  • Don't miss: Romantic Escape at Tierra Mar Spa, a side-by-side treatment in one of the two couples' suites.

Overview

The newest Four Seasons hotel in Mexico, open since June 2024, with 96 rooms and suites plus 61 residences and villas. Bob Glazier designed the architecture and Meyer Davis the interiors. The spa is what earns it a place: Tierra Mar builds its menu on Kumiai botanical practice across ten treatment rooms that each open onto a private garden, two of them couples' suites with an outdoor shower and a plunge pool attached. Four Seasons calls the beach a rare swimmable one on the Sea of Cortés, and "rare" is its own word; take that as the resort's claim and not an independent finding, because the Los Cabos tourism board, which puts the swimmable share of local beaches at 43%, doesn't name this one among those it lists.

Downside: the critic Brad A. Johnson, reviewing in September 2024, found the plunge pools attached to the rooms overlooked by neighbouring terraces, and put it down to planting that had yet to grow in. That landscaping has had two and a half years since, so treat it as a question for booking. The complaint that hasn't aged away is Sora, the rooftop bar, which Johnson found too loud for conversation and which Four Seasons relaunched in October 2025 with a DJ. Book Palmerio for the 14th. A golf course sits a cart ride away, but Four Seasons publishes no terms for guest access, so confirm before you count on it.

6. Maroma, A Belmond Hotel: Best Caribbean Beach for This Month

Seventy-two rooms on 200 acres, built to Mayan geometry without blueprints.

  • Location: Punta Maroma, between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen, about 30 minutes from Cancún airport.

  • Valentine's: Nothing published. All nine of its current offers run year-round.

  • Acclaim: No. 18 on The World's 50 Best Hotels in 2024 and No. 33 in 2025, plus Two MICHELIN Keys in 2024.

  • Don't miss: The Bee Healing Ritual at the Guerlain spa, 120 minutes, built around the Melipona bee.

Overview

Maroma reopened on 3 August 2023 after a renovation by Tara Bernerd and Partners. Its origin is unusually specific: the Mexico City architect José Luis Moreno found the site in the 1970s and built it without blueprints, working to sacred Mayan geometry from designs drawn in the sand. Roughly 700,000 hand-painted tiles came from the ceramicist José Noé Suro, and Maroma Spa by Guerlain opened in November 2023 as Guerlain's first in Latin America. February is the reason to book this one at all: sargassum peaks in June and July and bottoms out around November, which puts mid-February near the low point and months clear of the worst. The same property in April or July is a materially different gamble.

Downside: near the bottom of the curve isn't off it, and the hotel concedes the exposure by publishing a 7am daily monitoring routine and a machinery-based removal protocol. Reviews also flag some room layouts as awkward. This is a family-friendly property with a kids' club for ages 4 to 12; two of its three pools are adults-only, which means one of them is not.

7. Amanvari: Best New Opening, and the Swimmable Baja Alternative

Eighteen casitas on an estuary, and miles of Sea of Cortés you're actually allowed into.

  • Location: The East Cape, inside the Costa Palmas estate near La Ribera, 45 to 60 minutes from San José del Cabo airport.

  • Valentine's: Nothing published. The resort has no seasonal programming at all yet.

  • Acclaim: None, which reflects its age. It opened on 1 August 2026 and no award cycle has run since.

  • Don't miss: The spa's contemporary temazcal, reported as the first in Aman's global portfolio.

Overview

Amanvari opened on 1 August 2026, roughly six years behind schedule, with eighteen casitas of about 883 square feet, each with a private heated pool. The design was conceived by Heah and Co. and executed by Elastic Architects. Its value here is specific: Costa Palmas has miles of swimmable Sea of Cortés frontage, which Aman and the estate both state and the Los Cabos tourism board confirms by naming that beach as one of only two it lists for swimming. One point of order, because these get confused: the estate hosts two independently run resorts, and the Four Seasons on it is a different property from Four Seasons Resort Cabo Del Sol above.

Downside: it's brand new, and that showed in its first weeks. The resort acknowledged it was still completing work during its opening days, and it drew critical coverage in early August over a cancelled booking and a guest refused entry at the gate. The East Cape is remote, so you'll eat on property every night. Los Cabos also has by far the coldest water of the three coasts here, with March normals around 71°F against roughly 80°F in the Caribbean, so swimmable is a statement about safety. And it isn't adults-only: Aman publishes no minimum age and its casita pages list child rates. What it has is no children's programming.

Planning a Valentine's trip to Mexico

Choose the coast before the hotel

February is one of the few months where the three coasts genuinely differ. The Pacific around Banderas Bay has humpbacks, swimmable water at the right properties, and no exposure to the Atlantic sargassum belt. The Caribbean has the warmest sea by a clear margin and sits near its annual seaweed minimum. The Los Cabos corridor has the most dramatic coastline and the coldest water, and much of it is closed to swimmers, so check the specific beach before you book. For the broader picture organised by destination, our guide to romantic getaways in Mexico covers the same coasts region by region.

Book earlier than the date suggests

February is high season on both coasts. The Asociación de Hoteles de Los Cabos projected 79% occupancy for February 2026 and its director noted that February and March are historically the destination's strongest months; Nayarit ran at 82.67% state-wide in late February 2026. A three-night window with a federal holiday attached moves faster than a normal mid-February weekend, and the smallest properties have the least inventory to give.

Ask what's running, and expect a set menu

Since almost nothing is published in advance, contact the resort directly and ask. Most will run something on the night whether or not they announce it, and at the smaller ones it's often arranged per couple and never published. Ask two things specifically: whether the signature restaurant is on a fixed menu that night, and whether the spa's couples treatments need booking before you arrive, because those sell out ahead of the rooms.

Frequently asked questions

When is Valentine's Day 2027?

Valentine's Day 2027 falls on Sunday 14 February. Presidents' Day, a US federal holiday, falls the following day on Monday 15 February, which makes Friday 12 to Monday 15 a natural three-night trip with Valentine's Day in the middle of it.

Where should you go in Mexico for Valentine's Day?

It depends what you want from the ocean. For a couples-only stay, Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort has fifteen tented bungalows, a thirty-guest ceiling and a published minimum age of 16. For whales and swimmable water, Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita sits in the middle of humpback season in February. For a private villa and pool on the Caribbean, Viceroy Riviera Maya has 41 villas and no conventional rooms. For the dinner itself, Grand Velas Riviera Maya includes a MICHELIN-starred tasting menu in its rate.

Do luxury resorts in Mexico run Valentine's Day programmes?

Mostly they don't, or at least they don't publish one. Across the properties on this list, what you generally find is a year-round romance or honeymoon package with no reference to 14 February. The exception is Naviva, which publishes a dated programme for 2027: Canvas of the Heart, on 13 and 14 February, with guest artist Fer Da Silva, included in the nightly rate. Grand Velas Riviera Maya has history here too, having announced a couples' treatment for the date in January 2025, but its live offers page is years out of date and nothing was published for 2026. Everywhere else, contact the resort directly and ask what's running.

What is Día del Amor y la Amistad?

It's the Mexican name for 14 February, and it translates as the Day of Love and Friendship. The friendship part is real. The date covers friends and family as well as couples, schools mark it with gatherings, and Mexico's statistics institute publishes a data release for it. In practice a Mexican resort on 14 February holds families and groups of friends alongside couples, which is worth knowing when you pick where to stay.

Can you see whales in Mexico in February?

Yes, and February is one of the better months for it. Humpbacks are in Banderas Bay on the Pacific coast in mid-February, roughly two thirds of the way through a season that has run from 8 December to 23 March in each of the last two years. The dates are set annually by SEMARNAT, and each recent notice has also closed two areas to observation: within 1.5 km of the Islas Marietas, and a 2 km coastal strip from Punta Mita to the mouth of the Río Ameca, where mothers with calves shelter. Book through the resort.

Is there sargassum in Mexico in February?

February is close to the best case. Sargassum on the Mexican Caribbean peaks in June and July and reaches its annual minimum around November, with regrowth restarting through December and January, so mid-February sits near the bottom of the curve. It is not a guarantee for any specific beach on any specific date. Mexico's Pacific coast, including Punta Mita, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, sits outside the Atlantic sargassum belt altogether.

How far in advance should you book a Valentine's trip to Mexico?

Earlier than you'd think for a February weekend. February is high season on both coasts, with Los Cabos projected at 79% occupancy for February 2026 and Nayarit running above 82% state-wide late that month, and the 2027 date carries a US federal holiday behind it. The smallest properties, which are the ones best suited to a couple, are the first to go.
