When you're marrying hundreds of miles from home, your planner is your eyes, ears and negotiator on the ground. Choosing well is the most important decision you'll make after the venue. Ask every candidate these questions:
How many weddings do you run each year, and how many at once? You want focus, not a factory.
Have you worked at our venue before? Local relationships smooth everything.
Are you fluent in the local language and legal process? Essential for paperwork and vendors.
What's included in your fee — and what isn't? Get the line items in writing.
How do you charge — flat fee, percentage, or commission from vendors? Commission models can bias recommendations.
Can you share a real budget from a comparable wedding? Reveals hidden costs early.
Who is our day-of contact? Make sure it's someone you've actually met.
What's your contingency plan for weather? Every outdoor venue needs a plan B.
Can you connect us with past couples? References matter more than Instagram.
How do you handle guest logistics — transport, accommodation blocks, welcome events?
Trust your instinct on communication, too. If replies are slow or vague now, that won't improve under pressure. Once you've found your venue in our destinations, ask them which planners they recommend — the best ones are often booked a year ahead.
